What is the average AP® US History score?
Every year, the average AP® US History score changes. This is due to a number of factors such as a revised exam (which was the case for AP® US History in Fall 2014) and a different student population to calculate scores from. One of the best ways to think about the average AP® US History score is to consider a multi-year trend. For example, referencing the AP® Student Score Distributions released by the College Board, the mean AP® US History score was 3.23 in 2024, 2.54 in 2023, 2.57 in 2022, 2.92 in 2021, and 2.83 in 2020. Taking the raw average of these five years, you should think of the average AP® US History being 2.82.
Why are AP® US History scores curved?
The College Board curves AP® exams every year in order to maintain a certain standard and level of consistency; AP® US History is no exception. AP® courses are inherently college-level classes, and thus the scoring guidelines are reflected to account for the rigor of these courses.
