In this post we will discuss how to convert your GRE score to a GMAT score. Why might you want to do this? Before you knew you wanted to apply to business school, you may have taken the GRE. Now you know you want to go to business school, and your school of choice does not accept the GRE. You might be wondering what score you are likely to get on the GMAT.
Or, maybe you took the GRE and your business school of choice accepts that in their admissions process. However, the acceptance information for the school lists GMAT scores, not GRE scores, and you’d like to see how your GRE score converts to a GMAT score. This way you can do a score comparison against those who have taken the GMAT, and determine where you stand.
You’re in luck! We’ll provide you with a handy comparison chart to do a GRE to GMAT score conversion. We’ve done it for you so that you can save your time for studying.

You can find all of the detailed information on the conversion here, and additional information on the calculation can be found here. The calculation is:
GMAT Total score = -2080.75 + 6.38*GRE Verbal Reasoning score + 10.62*GRE Quantitative Reasoning score.
Here’s an example:
Let’s say you scored a 156 on GRE Verbal Reasoning, and 145 on GRE Quantitative Reasoning. That’s -2080.75 + 6.38*156 + 10.62*145 = 454.43. That’s your equivalent score on the GMAT
We’ll try one more, just to be sure you have the hang of it. You did great on the GRE Verbal Reasoning, and scored a 168, but not so well on the GRE Quantitative Reasoning, and scored a 134. How does this compare to a GMAT score?
-2080.75 + 6.38*168 + 10.62*134 = 414.17
In this instance, because a lower score on the Quantitative Reasoning section is more impactful, the GMAT score is lower.
That being said, because the GRE and GMAT are so different, the score comparison is not a perfect one-to-one relationship.
How Is the GRE Different from the GMAT?
The GRE and the GMAT are two very different tests. Not different like apples and elephants, but probably as different as apples and mangoes. That is a very technical relationship – apples versus mangoes. Apples and mangoes have a .67 correlation, while apples and elephants have a .0012 correlation. You’ve heard that, right?

The GRE contains six sections. Quantitative Reasoning (two sections), Verbal Reasoning (two sections), Analytical Writing, Research, and Unscored. The Research and Unscored sections may be included, and neither will count toward your score.
The GMAT exam is made up of four sections. Like the GRE, GMAT contains an Analytical Writing Assessment section, a Verbal section, and a Quantitative section. The GMAT also has an Integrated Reasoning section, which tests Multi-Source Reasoning, Graphics Interpretation, Two-Part Analysis, and Table Analysis.
GRE Verbal emphasizes vocabulary while GMAT Verbal emphasizes vocabulary. While everything is relative, we can indeed say that the GRE’s Quantitative Reasoning section is easier than GMAT’s quantitative section – for most people.
The total GRE is 3 hours and 45 minutes long, with one optional 10-minute break. The GMAT is 3 hours and 30 minutes long with two optional 10-minute breaks.
There you have it. You can convert your GRE score to a GMAT score to get an idea of how they compare. However, because the tests are different, the conversion is not an exact science.
