5th Grade Math is organized by content themes and further broken down into topics. Within each topic, questions are organized by leveled subtopics that increase in depth and difficulty as the student progresses.
Themes
Our 5th Grade Math course includes six themes:
- Number Sense and Place Value
- Operations with Whole Numbers and Decimals
- Operations with Fractions
- Expressions and Algebraic Reasoning
- Angles, Volume, and Graphing
- Measurement and Data Analysis
Topics
Each theme contains a range of specific topics. For example, here is a list of topics within our "Operations with Fractions" theme:
- Visualize Fractions
- Interpret Fractions
- Equivalent Fractions
- Compare and Order Fractions
- Add and Subtract Fractions
- Multiply Fractions
- Divide Fractions
Subtopics
Each topic contains more focused, scaffolded subtopics called "levels". A typical topic will begin with many easy, skill-based questions in "Level 1". As the levels increase, question ratios will shift towards more moderate and difficult questions with more real-life applications and conceptual practice.
Here's an example of subtopics within the topic "Visualize Fractions":
- Level 1: Equal-sized pieces of a whole
- Level 2: Graph fractions on number line
- Level 3: Connect fractions and decimals
Skills Practice
Based on teacher feedback, we’ve added extra Skill Practice subtopics to relevant 5th Grade Math topics. These topics give students the at-bats they need to develop procedural fluency.
These subtopics include only multiple choice and multiple select questions with the “skill” tag.
Graphing Practice
We've also added Graphing Practice subtopics to relevant 5th Grade Math topics. These are interactive graphing type questions that are meant to build fluency with the coordinate plane.
Assessments
In addition to our practice guide, 5th Grade Math includes a cumulative "end of course" exam in the Assessment tab with questions unique from those in our practice guide.
