Subject Organization

Albert's Leveled Readings course is organized by genre, then by topic, and finally by subtopic according to Lexile level.

Themes

Leveled Readings includes the following themes:

Topics

Each theme contains a range of specific topics anchored by an Essential Question that engages students to think critically. For example, here are some topics within Arts and Culture | Visual Art, Film, and Nature.
  • The Dying Arts: What has caused this recent decline in once popular forms of entertainment?
  • Presidential Portraits: How have these portraits changed throughout time and what do these changes say about our society?
  • Videogames as Works of Art: Are video games works of art? What does it mean for art "viewers" to become participants when they play as a character?

Subtopics

Each topic contains four subtopics: the same passage, written at varying Lexile levels so that teachers can meet each student where they are while still having a unified classroom discussion.
Here’s an example from "College Requirements for Athletes: Should the NBA/NFL make attending college a requirement?":
  • 550L The Rules Have Changed
  • 780L Is This Fair?
  • 900L The Pros and Cons
  • 1110L Risks to Sports

Free Response Questions

Leveled Readings also includes written response questions tied to each topic's Essential Question so that teachers can check for student understanding at the end of a reading.

Using Standards and Tags to Find Questions

Standards

All Albert questions are aligned to state standards relevant to the subject matter. Albert’s English Language Arts questions are aligned to Common Core Standards for English Language Arts.
This standards alignment provides another easy way to find useful questions besides the Theme and Topic organization. Using the Standards button at the top left corner of any subject page, you can filter for just your state’s standard set then simply search for your state’s standards to find all questions in our course library aligned to that standard! For more details, please see this article in our Help section.
In addition to searching by the standards’ names, you can also search by their content! Simply type in a few words from the standard description to see all relevant standards pertaining to that content.

Tags

Albert’s Leveled Readings course includes three types of tags: skills tags, content tags, and Lexile level tags. These are words or phrases that provide information about what a question covers, such as context-clues, 20th-century, or 1220L. Tags provide another easy way to search for relevant content in our course library. Simply search using the Tags button at the top left corner of any guide level.

Leveled Readings uses a variety of question types to test students’ understanding of content and provide meaningful practice of important skills.
